Discovering Singapore: A Cultural Paradise Beyond the Glamour

Since Crazy Rich Asians showcased Singapore’s opulent lifestyle, many have overlooked the city-state’s rich cultural tapestry. While the glittering skyline and luxury brands paint a portrait of excess, Singapore is solidifying its status as a cultural hub in Asia. Recent high-profile events, such as Chanel’s Cruise 2025-26 show at the iconic Raffles Hotel and the upcoming Loewe Foundation Craft Prize exhibition, emphasize the city’s burgeoning relevance in the world of arts and style.

Singapore Art Week: A Creative Explosion

From January 22 to 31, Singapore Art Week (SAW) will transform the city into a cultural epicenter, highlighted by ART SG. This annual art fair, held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo, serves as the cornerstone of the event. The event will attract artists, curators, and collectors from around the world. "During Singapore Art Week, the city becomes a vibrant hub of artistic activity," notes Magnus Renfrew, cofounder of ART SG. Expect to witness an ambitious lineup, including a Performance Art sector and a compelling film program at the ArtScience Museum.

A Growing Art Scene

Since the 2010s, Singapore has experienced a revitalization of its art scene, marked notably by the transformation of Gillman Barracks into a contemporary gallery precinct and the opening of the National Gallery Singapore. "The scene has matured quickly in both confidence and infrastructure," says Shuyin Yang, director of ART SG. This cultural evolution has established Singapore not just as a local market, but as a significant player in the Southeast Asian art community.

Cultural Insights from Local Artists

Three key figures in the Singaporean art scene—Bessie Ye, Ute Meta Bauer, and Kristen Millar—highlight their preferred venues for experiencing art. Ye emphasizes the National Gallery Singapore, which boasts the world’s largest public collection of modern Southeast Asian art. Bauer supports this sentiment, citing the surrounding area, the Bras Basah and Civic District, as an essential part of understanding Singapore’s diverse art landscape.

Innovative Spaces and Creative Communities

STPI (Singapore Tyler Print Institute) serves as a melting pot for international artists, offering cutting-edge printmaking residencies. Bauer describes it as an essential part of Singapore’s art ecosystem. Meanwhile, the New Bahru district emerges as a vibrant lifestyle destination, showcasing galleries, eateries, and design studios. Here, the exhibition Rituals of Perception illustrates how contemporary art interacts with the body and material, further solidifying New Bahru’s place in the cultural landscape.

Gillman Barracks: A Gallery Destination

Launched in 2013, Gillman Barracks was redesigned as a contemporary art enclave and remains a cornerstone for aspiring artists and major galleries, welcoming both local and international talent. As it gears up for potential future development, it is set to continue as a vibrant art destination through 2030. Bauer describes Gillman Barracks as a hub for high-quality artworks, making it a must-visit for art aficionados.

NoMad Singapore: Art Meets Luxury

Opening later this year, NoMad Singapore will reimagine luxury hospitality. The hotel aims to become a cultural destination, acquiring 1,800 art pieces, 90% of which are created by Singapore-based artists. This initiative aligns with the hotel’s mission to engage in and foster local culture. “By partnering with local artists and foundations like Art:Dis, NoMad Singapore aims to support creative expression while offering guests a unique experience," notes Global Brand Director Kristen Millar.
