The third victim, highlighted earlier, was 19-year-old Marcus Alexander Muench Casanova, a college freshman from Seal Beach, California. Initially, investigators concluded that the two older men had no known connection to the young college student, despite circumstances surrounding their unfortunate accidents occurring within a close time frame and location.

The search and rescue operation initiated on December 29 at about 11:30 a.m., following reports of an injured hiker near the Devil’s Backbone trail. The rescue began after Casanova’s hiking companion departed to seek cell phone service and provided GPS coordinates for rescuers. This exemplifies the common challenges faced by hikers attempting to navigate remote terrains without proper equipment or support, making a clear case for prioritizing safety when exploring wilderness areas.
