Families Together of Orange County: Championing Community Health Since 2003
Since its inception in 2003, Families Together of Orange County (FTOC) has been a beacon of hope for underserved populations in the region. Founded by CEO Alexander Rossel in partnership with private doctors, FTOC began as a small medical and dental practice at 661 West 1st Street, Tustin. Today, it has evolved into a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) Look-Alike, with a mission to enhance health services for the community, effectively addressing barriers to healthcare access.
A Community-Centric Approach to Healthcare
From the very beginning, FTOC aimed to break down barriers that hinder community members from receiving necessary healthcare. Understanding that language barriers, lack of knowledge about navigating the healthcare system, and transportation issues were significant roadblocks, the organization made these areas focal points. One of their earliest initiatives was offering in-house transportation—a hallmark of all their locations that still exists today. From educational resources to transportation solutions, FTOC aimed to make healthcare more accessible for everyone.
A Transformational Partnership
The journey of FTOC is highlighted by its commitment to collaboration. Initially, the medical clinic at 661 W. 1st Street worked closely with a resource center in Santa Ana, also named Families Together of Orange County. This collaboration connected community members to essential medical services and vice versa. However, in 2013, the original resource center faced challenges that threatened its sustainability. Recognizing the community’s needs, Rossel took over as CEO, revitalizing the nonprofit and establishing it as a community-centric healthcare model.
Transition to Community Clinic
Under Rossel’s leadership, FTOC transitioned from a private practice to a community clinic by 2015. This pivotal shift allowed the organization to expand its service offerings significantly. In December 2016, Families Together became a Federally Qualified Health Center Look-Alike after successfully passing a rigorous federal inspection with flying colors—achieving a 100% score on their first attempt. This accomplishment marked the beginning of a new chapter for FTOC, providing a framework for continuous growth and improvement.
Expanding Services and Reach
With its designation as an FQHC Look-Alike, Families Together flourished. The organization now accommodates over 10,000 visits each month and has expanded its footprint to include additional sites in Fountain Valley and Garden Grove. Moreover, its dedicated Wellness Center in Tustin provides a wide array of mental health and specialty services, ensuring comprehensive care for all patients. Importantly, FTOC also operates four mobile health units that reach vulnerable populations across Orange County, providing essential medical, dental, behavioral health, and vision services at schools, parks, and shelters.
