The Science of Big Waves: Vini dos Santos’ Historic Ride

A recent scientific study presented at the International Workshop on Waves, Storm Surges & Coastal Hazards at the University of Cantabria in Spain has unveiled an extraordinary achievement by Brazilian surfer Vini dos Santos. The study suggests that he may have ridden a wave exceeding 100 feet (around 30.5 meters) at Nazaré, Portugal, on February 25, 2022. PhD oceanographer Douglas Nemes led the research, which has garnered significant attention in both the surfing and scientific communities. This potential record-breaking ride surpasses the current official world record of 86 feet (26.21 meters), set by German surfer Sebastian Steudtner in October 2020.

Surfing Meets Scientific Validation

The study has been met with enthusiasm from both Vini dos Santos and the scientific community. According to Nemes, the acceptance of this research signifies a major step in understanding wave measurement techniques. "The study’s acceptance for publication represents significant recognition… with great relevance for the scientific community and for Vini dos Santos, who potentially surfed one of the biggest waves on the planet," he explained. The event also featured the screening of Ground Swell: The Other Side of Fear, a documentary narrated by Josh Brolin that highlights significant moments in surfing history, including Vini’s remarkable feat. Vini’s Emotional Journey

Vini’s journey to this potential record was not without its challenges. Just ten days prior to his incredible ride, he faced a severe accident that involved a cow, leaving him with a torn scalp that required staples. This life-threatening experience heightened the significance of his wave-riding achievement. "When I rode the wave, I was sure it was the biggest wave of my life… the ocean showed up for me," he recalled. The emotional stakes were high, as the devastating accident made Vini find newfound meaning in his surfing experience.

Teamwork and Courage

On the day of the record attempt, Vini was not alone. He was supported by a dedicated team of surfers, including names like Lucas Chumbo, Andrew Cotton, and others. Together, they had ten jet skis ready for any emergency. Vini knew that the Nazaré surf was going to be massive. "At the moment I rode the wave, no one else wanted to go," he recounted, describing how he volunteered to take the plunge. His unwavering courage is a testament to the spirit of adventure that defines big wave surfing. The encouragement from his teammates, especially Chumbo, helped push him past his fears to harness the power of the ocean.

The Science Behind Wave Measurement

So how exactly are big waves measured? Douglas Nemes has developed a meticulous method honed over two decades, utilizing oceanographic instrumentation and topography techniques. This innovative method includes measuring wave height through GPS technology affixed to surfers and analyzing their postures during different phases of the ride. "To develop the complete method, more than 5,000 waves were analyzed," Nemes stated, underscoring the depth of research involved. This precise scientific approach has the potential to transform how the surfing community measures and validates incredible feats of athleticism.

The Future of Big Wave Records

As the excitement around Vini dos Santos’ wave height calculation grows, specifics about how this record will ultimately be validated are still being determined. The World Surf League (WSL) has indeed established a scientific method for measuring big wave rides, passing the responsibility to Guinness World Records. Various technologies, such as drones and UAVs, are also being implemented for wave height measurements. As the conversation continues, debates exist regarding the criteria required for a successful wave ride and whether the surfers must reach the trough to truly claim their victory. Despite the complexities involved, Vini remains hopeful: "What matters more is what to do with it, what I can do with this wave and this story," he concluded, underscoring his goal to inspire the next generation of surfers.
