The materials tested include Aqua Armour, a contemporary chainmail-like fabric; Brewster material, a strong Kevlar and polyurethane blend; Shark Stop, made from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE); and ActionTX-S, a similar UHMWPE-based fabric combined with flexible Yulex rubber neoprene. Each of these innovative fabrics was rigorously tested against live sharks to gauge their effectiveness.
Methodology of the Study
The research involved baiting 28 great white sharks and eight tiger sharks to interact with dummy targets wrapped in either standard 3-mm neoprene (the control material) or the new protective fabrics. Over the course of 19 days, researchers recorded 84 bites from great whites and 68 from tiger sharks, analyzing the extent of damage inflicted on the materials. Damage levels were categorized as tiny grazes, slight cuts, deep lacerations, and critical injuries.
Results from Great White and Tiger Sharks
Testing results revealed that when attacked by great white sharks, traditional neoprene incurred substantial damage about 8% of the time, with 3% classified as critical. However, the protective fabrics diminished this risk dramatically. For instance, the Aqua Armour saw reduced substantial damage levels drop to less than 1%, with virtually no critical injuries recorded. Similarly encouraging results were observed with the other innovative fabrics, showcasing their potential to offer a much-needed layer of security for water sports enthusiasts.
