‘Harry Potter’ actor John Lithgow says JK Rowling’s trans views have been ‘twisted and misrepresented’

John Lithgow Defends J.K. Rowling Amid Controversy Surrounding "Harry Potter" Series

John Lithgow, the acclaimed actor known for his versatile roles, recently stepped into the spotlight defending J.K. Rowling in response to the ongoing backlash surrounding her views on transgender issues. As he prepares to portray Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” reboot, Lithgow emphasized that the backlash against Rowling’s opinions has often been “twisted and misrepresented.” Despite his personal disagreements with some of her statements, he firmly believes in the reasons for continuing with the project.

Lithgow shared his thoughts during an interview with The New Yorker Radio Hour, where he candidly discussed the pressures he faced to withdraw from the production due to Rowling’s controversial stance. “I was urged to step away from the project,” said Lithgow, “but I was not about to do that.” He highlighted that the positive aspects of the job significantly outweighed the reasons for protesting Rowling’s views. The actor’s commitment to the project reflects not only his appreciation for the role but also his recognition of the broader impact of the Harry Potter franchise.

During the interview, Lithgow elaborated on the duality of his experience. He noted that while he disagrees with much of Rowling’s rhetoric, he feels that some of it has been unfairly distorted. “There’s everything attractive about the job,” he said, emphasizing the importance of job security in his later years. He acknowledged that the controversy surrounding Rowling’s statements emerged later in the process, yet his decision to continue was already solidified. Importantly, Lithgow credited the show’s creative team for drawing him in, particularly showrunner Francesca Gardiner, stating, “I have not met her,” referring to Rowling.

Lithgow has expressed heartfelt concerns regarding Rowling’s social media presence, stating he feels “surprised and disappointed” by the tone of her posts. Previously, at the Rotterdam Film Festival, he characterized her views as “ironic and inexplicable,” underlining the contradiction between her comments and the themes of acceptance found within the Harry Potter books. “In ‘Potter’ canon, you see no trace of transphobic sensitivity,” he argued, highlighting how the narrative promotes kindness and understanding, exemplified through the character of Dumbledore.

This controversy has reverberated throughout Hollywood, prompting other actors to weigh in. Andrew Garfield, known for his role in “The Amazing Spider-Man,” referred to Rowling as “she that shall remain nameless” while criticizing her as someone who supports “inhumane” ideals. He mentioned, “We can’t throw the baby out with the bathwater,” calling attention to the myriad artists and creatives involved in the original films who deserve recognition for their contributions despite the ongoing debate surrounding Rowling.

The tension surrounding Rowling’s opinions has also strained her relationships with several actors from the original films, including Emma Watson. The author drew criticism after making derogatory remarks about those who signed a pro-trans open letter following a controversial UK Supreme Court ruling. Rowling labeled these actors “back-stabbing colleagues” motivated by fear, further widening the rift between her and the cast. This has led to significant challenges for those involved in the upcoming reboot, notably resulting in serious safety concerns for actor Paapa Essiedu, who received death threats following his casting as Severus Snape.

Continuing to champion the reboot, Rowling expressed her excitement over early footage, stating, “It’s going to be incredible. I’m so happy with it.” The new “Harry Potter” series is set to debut over Christmas 2026 on HBO and will stream on HBO Max. With the cast and creative team actively addressing the controversy, it remains to be seen how the series will navigate this complex landscape of public perception and celebrity relations. Ultimately, Lithgow’s defense of Rowling emphasizes the multifaceted nature of this ongoing dialogue, where art, creator intent, and social responsibility collide.
