Celebrating Trombone Virtuosos: A Night of Jazz and Community
The vibrant world of jazz often gives rise to a rich tapestry of collaboration, mentorship, and artistic expression. "Funny Bones: A Trombone Summit" promises to encapsulate this spirit, bringing together an extraordinary array of trombonists for an evening dedicated to both the art of music and the community that supports it. Scheduled for August 13, 2026, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Campus Jax in Newport Beach, this event is set to be a thrilling celebration that engages both seasoned jazz enthusiasts and those new to the scene.
The Legacy of Trombone
Trombones may often take a backseat to their more popular counterparts, like trumpets and saxophones, but their unique sound and emotional range make them indispensable to jazz ensembles. Whether through smooth, lyrical melodies or powerful, brassy blasts, the trombone offers a voice that resonates deeply with audiences. The "Funny Bones" concert emphasizes this versatility, showcasing both established trombonists and emerging talents.
A Line-up to Remember
At the center of this celebration is Matthew Elton Smith, a versatile musician whose journey began with the trombone before he turned his talents to percussion. Smith not only leads the rhythm section but also serves as a focal point for the evening’s integrative spirit. He is joined by a veritable who’s who of trombone talent.
Joey Sellers, a luminary in jazz education and an award-winning composer, will undoubtedly inspire the audience. His lengthy career includes numerous prestigious accolades, making his presence an invaluable addition to the summit.
Abdullah Ebrahim, another remarkable trombonist, bridges the classical and contemporary with his diverse experience, from performing with the Glenn Miller Orchestra to pursuing innovative jazz improvisation. His unique artistry reflects the evolving landscape of modern jazz.
Adding to the eclectic mix are Steven Robinson and Bob Lawrence. Robinson’s background spans multiple genres, while Lawrence’s expertise demonstrates strong ties to both jazz and Latin music, offering a broad sonic palette for attendees.
The Rhythm Section: Heartbeat of the Summit
Every successful jazz concert is underpinned by a talented rhythm section, and "Funny Bones" is no exception. Sam Ross, the pianist, is known for his modern approach to jazz, while Cole Sainburg’s multifaceted influences will add a rich layer to the performance. Finally, the evening’s pulse will be maintained by Smith on the drums, ensuring a seamless blend of rhythm and melody.
Connection Through Music
One of the most compelling aspects of the "Funny Bones" summit is its focus on community and mentorship. The relationships formed through years of study and collaboration glimmer in the performances, demonstrating how music binds individuals together. Each trombonist on stage has a story of mentorship, friendship, and shared experiences that transcend mere performances, offering a sense of unity that resonates deeply within the audience.
Embracing Various Generations
The summit celebrates not just established talents but also the new generation of trombonists. This mixture of seasoned artists and younger musicians illustrates the ongoing evolution of jazz.
