Animal Cruelty Case in Long Beach: A Disturbing Incident and the Path to Justice

In a deeply disturbing event that has garnered widespread attention, 28-year-old Alexander Cueva faces serious allegations of animal cruelty following the shocking abuse of a German Shepherd mix. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged Cueva with one felony count of cruelty to an animal, including the particularly concerning allegation of using a leash as a deadly weapon during the attack. This case not only highlights the severity of animal cruelty but also sparks critical conversations about accountability and justice for vulnerable creatures.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed his dismay over the calculated violence inflicted upon the defenseless animal, stating, “To see this level of calculated violence inflicted on a helpless animal is deeply troubling.” This case stands as the second felony animal cruelty case filed within the same week, signaling the DA’s office’s commitment to prioritizing animal welfare and prosecuting those who engage in such inhumane behavior. Hochman emphasized that they would not falter in bringing charges against acts of cruelty, reinforcing a message that animal abuse will not be tolerated in the community.

The incident reportedly took place early Monday morning and was captured on surveillance footage. In the harrowing video, Cueva is seen walking with the leash-bound dog slung over his shoulder, only to violently slam it to the ground. Following the initial assault, the dog, appearing alive, shows slight resistance before Cueva kicks it and continues to carry it away, further escalating the distressing scene. The graphic nature of this footage has evoked outrage and a collective call to action from the public, underscoring the urgent need to protect animals from such cruelty.

In response to the incident, numerous advocates, including the non-profit organization PETA, took immediate action by offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for the abuse. This swift mobilization underscores the power of community activism and collective outrage in addressing animal cruelty. As the video circulated, calls for justice intensified, prompting the Long Beach police to act quickly in apprehending Cueva on Tuesday, just a day after the incident was recorded.

Upon his arrest, the City of Long Beach’s animal care services department swiftly intervened and took custody of the abused dog, highlighting the urgency of providing safety to animals in distress. Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish issued a strong statement denouncing the act of cruelty, emphasizing the department’s dedication to ensuring that those who harm vulnerable beings are brought to justice. The police department’s responsiveness demonstrates their commitment to animal welfare, aligning with broader societal values concerning protection and compassion for all living beings.

Now facing serious charges, Cueva is currently jailed with a bail set at $120,000 and will undergo arraignment at the Long Beach courthouse. If convicted, he could potentially face up to four years in state prison, sending a clear message about the consequences of animal cruelty. The judicial process that follows will be closely monitored, as the community stands united in the hope that justice will prevail for the innocent animal victimized in this alarming incident. This case serves as a poignant reminder of the responsibility we bear towards animals and the importance of advocating for their protection against cruelty and violence.
