Dance in the Heart of Orange County: Experience Backhausdance’s Summer Showcase at Chapman University

As summer days stretch into warm evenings, the sound of music fills the halls of the Sandi Simon Center for Dance at Chapman University, where the excitement of the Backhausdance Summer Intensive culminates in an electrifying performance next week. This annual showcase, happening on July 24 at 6 p.m., offers more than just a night of dance; it’s a vibrant celebration of creativity, community, and the local arts scene here in Orange County.

A Dance Showcase Like No Other

This year’s performance, “Deconstructed Hive,” is a reimagined version of Artistic Director Jennifer Backhaus’ celebrated work from 2017. Inspired by the intricate social structures of a beehive, the piece embodies themes of collaboration, hierarchy, and unity among the young dancers who have come from all over to participate in the intensive. With a compelling score by the Kronos Quartet setting the mood, attendees can expect an evening that’s not just a display of talent but a heartfelt expression of community spirit.

What to Expect at the Performance

As you settle into your seat at the Sandi Simon Center, get ready for a captivating experience that leads you through various emotional landscapes. The performance showcases the growth and transformation of students who have spent weeks honing their craft under the guidance of Backhausdance faculty, including esteemed instructors who are seasoned performers and alumni of Chapman University.

Expect to see stunning choreography that reflects both individual flair and the harmonious collective effort of the dancers on stage. With intricate formations and innovative movement that echo the social dynamics of a beehive, the piece promises to resonate deeply, reminding us of our interconnectedness.

Perfect for All Ages

Whether you’re a dance aficionado, a curious parent, or someone looking for a unique night out, the Backhausdance showcase is perfect for everyone. Families will find the atmosphere welcoming, making it an excellent opportunity to introduce children and teens to the beauty of contemporary dance. Award-winning choreography combined with the relatable themes of community and teamwork promises to engage audiences of all ages.

Weekend Planning Made Easy

For those considering making a day of it, the performance conveniently fits into a weekend itinerary. Start your day with brunch at one of Orange County’s beloved spots—think Alice’s Breakfast in the Park for a casual meal or The Filling Station Café for something with a local touch. After savoring delicious food, you can explore the charming streets of Old Towne Orange, where antique shops and boutique stores brim with character.

If dance inspires you, consider signing up for a workshop at Backhausdance’s very own Educators Institute, which runs concurrently with the Summer Intensive. This four-day program allows dance instructors to connect and collaborate, ensuring that the educational offerings of Backhausdance redefine the local dance ecosystem.

Parking Tips for a Smooth Experience

Parking in the Orange area can be accessible if you plan ahead. The Sandi Simon Center for Dance is well-served by various parking lots; however, it’s recommended to arrive early to secure a spot. Street parking is an option, but check those signs to avoid any surprises. Backhausdance isn’t just about performances; it’s about fostering a love for dance throughout the community. This Summer Intensive has become an integral part of the organization’s identity, emphasizing mentorship and growth not just on stage, but also in the lives of all involved. As participants learn from choreographers and established dancers, they carry the lessons of teamwork, creativity, and resilience—skills beneficial far beyond the dance floor.

Beyond the showcase, Backhausdance continuously engages with the community through outreach programs, underscoring their commitment to education in the arts.
