Adrian Kempe agrees to 8-year, $85-million deal with Kings

Adrian Kempe Signs Lucrative Contract Extension with the Kings: What It Means for the Team and Fans

Forward Adrian Kempe has officially committed to the Los Angeles Kings, signing an impressive eight-year contract worth $85 million. This deal, which averages $10.625 million per year, illustrates the Kings’ determination to build around key talent as they look toward future success. According to an anonymous source familiar with the situation, the Kings are expected to confirm the contract soon, ensuring that the 29-year-old Kempe will remain with the team through the 2033-34 season.

Kempe’s performance has been outstanding, making him an essential figure for the Kings over the last four seasons. He earned an All-Star selection in 2022 and has played a pivotal role in helping the team secure four consecutive playoff appearances. A product of the Kings’ 2014 draft, where he was selected 29th overall, Kempe’s impressive stats boast 200 goals and 220 assists throughout his decade-long career with the organization. His recent campaign saw him achieve a career-high 41 goals, complementing his consistent prowess with four straight seasons of 25 goals or more.

Currently, Kempe is leading the team in scoring for the 2023-24 season, clocking in with six goals and 13 assists across 19 games. His versatility is further demonstrated by his frequent contributions on special teams, highlighting his all-around value to the Kings. Moreover, he has been named to Sweden’s initial roster for the upcoming 2026 Olympic Games, underlining his talent on an international scale.

The commitment to re-sign Kempe signals a strategic move by new Kings general manager Ken Holland, who recognizes the importance of sustaining a core group of players following the anticipated retirement of long-time captain Anze Kopitar next year. Holland has expressed that maintaining both leadership and talent is vital for the franchise’s ongoing success. Although negotiations stretched over the summer into the current season, causing speculation about Kempe potentially testing free agency, the new deal underscores both the player’s loyalty and the Kings’ focus on long-term strategy.

In a landscape where notable stars like Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel, and Kirill Kaprizov also recently secured contract extensions with their respective teams, Kempe’s renewal signifies a shift in the dynamics of player retention within the NHL. Teams are prioritizing their top talents, and Kempe’s decision to remain with the Kings reinforces the notion that strong organizational culture can attract and keep players.

As the Kings currently stand with a record of 10 wins, 5 losses, and 4 overtime losses, they have shown resilience, bouncing back with four consecutive victories after a rocky start to the season. Their upcoming game against Washington presents another opportunity to continue building momentum. With Kempe’s new contract, Kings fans can look forward to a bright future, as this pivotal player remains at the forefront of the team’s aspirations for success in the seasons ahead.
