Rams fire special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn

Rams’ Special Teams Struggles Lead to Coaching Shakeup

The Los Angeles Rams are currently navigating a tumultuous season, with their performance under scrutiny, especially regarding their special teams. With four losses thus far, three have been directly linked to breakdowns in special teams play. Following their recent defeat against the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Sean McVay decided it was time for a change. Chase Blackburn, who has served as the Rams’ special teams coordinator for the last three seasons, was dismissed from his position. The decision highlights the increasing pressure on McVay as he aims to maintain the high expectations set for a team boasting a potent offense and a formidable defense.

Special Teams Accountability

In a recent analysis, Blackburn acknowledged the challenges faced by special teams coaches, emphasizing the need to continuously adapt and overcome. However, the Rams found these challenges insurmountable, particularly in critical game situations. The calamity struck during a high-stakes affair with the Seahawks where the Rams squandered a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter. Rashid Shaheed’s pivotal 58-yard punt return for a touchdown reignited the Seahawks’ drive, ultimately leading to a 38-37 overtime loss for Los Angeles. This defeat not only ended the Rams’ aspirations for the No. 1 seed in the NFC but also dropped them from the top position in the NFC West.

The Consequences of Special Teams Errors

Throughout the season, special teams have emerged as a recurring issue for the Rams, manifesting in various significant errors. Earlier in the season, during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the team witnessed two field-goal attempts blocked by the opposing defense, one of which was returned for a game-winning touchdown at the end of regulation. Following this, a narrow overtime defeat against the San Francisco 49ers saw kicker Joshua Karty miss essential field-goals and an extra-point attempt, compounding the team’s special teams woes. These critical blunders ultimately served as catalysts for McVay’s decision to reevaluate the special teams coaching strategy.

Changes in Personnel

In light of the ongoing struggles, the Rams opted to make a shift in their kicking game. Prior to a pivotal matchup against the 49ers, Los Angeles brought in kicker Harrison Mevis and veteran snapper Jake McQuaide to supplant Karty and Alex Ward. This decision appeared to stabilize the kicking game, as Mevis succeeded in making all eight of his field-goal attempts following his signing. His performance against the Seahawks was commendable, despite a missed 48-yard attempt with two minutes remaining in regulation. Such measures reflect the urgency felt within the organization as they try to rectify the complications plaguing their special teams unit.

Prospects and Upcoming Challenges

Despite their current struggles, the Rams have clinched a playoff spot, reflecting the team’s resilience in facing challenges head-on. They face the Atlanta Falcons on November 29 in what promises to be a crucial game. Following that, they will wrap up the regular season against the Arizona Cardinals at home. As they prepare for these matchups, the emphasis will undoubtedly be on solidifying their overall team performance while learning from the evident pitfalls encountered in special teams play this season.

Conclusion: The Road Ahead

The Rams are at a pivotal juncture in their season, staring down the implications of their special teams’ failures and the resultant shifts in coaching staff. While the loss to the Seahawks was deeply felt, it also served as a catalyst for restructuring within the team. As they move forward, the focus will need to remain sharp, particularly on special teams, to ensure that such breakdowns do not continue to affect the outcomes of future games. With a playoff berth secured, the team must leverage the coming weeks to build momentum and rectify past errors, ultimately aiming for a strong postseason performance.
