Rams waive kicker Joshua Karty, who lost his job to Harrison Mevis

Rams Make Key Roster Changes: What You Need to Know

The Los Angeles Rams are making significant adjustments to their roster as they navigate the challenges of the 2023 NFL season. In a strategic move, the team waived kicker Joshua Karty on Friday, aiming to solidify their special teams unit. Karty, a sixth-round draft pick in 2024, faced early struggles that raised concerns among coaching staff. Notably, he had several kicks blocked, including a crucial one that allowed the Philadelphia Eagles to secure a game-losing touchdown in the closing moments. With a record of 10 out of 15 field-goal attempts and 23 out of 26 extra-point conversions, the Rams are moving forward with kicker Harrison Mevis, who has shown promising form lately.

Coach Sean McVay provided insight into this decision, emphasizing that the move was strictly a “numbers thing.” Managing a roster with two kickers proved challenging, especially when the team is focused on optimizing performance in all areas. Understanding the importance of consistency in special teams, McVay mentioned that if Karty clears waivers, the Rams would be interested in bringing him back to the practice squad. This approach underscores the Rams’ commitment to cultivating talent while also maintaining a competitive edge.

In addition to the kicker situation, the Rams are actively shuffling their roster to enhance their overall game strategy. Key players such as tight end Tyler Higbee, offensive lineman Rob Havenstein, and safety Quentin Lake have been placed on injured reserve. This has opened opportunities for others, with receiver Tutu Atwell and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon making their returns from injured reserve. Signing players like tight end Nick Vannett and cornerback Derion Kendrick reflects the Rams’ proactive approach to ensuring their roster remains competitive despite injuries.

The recent performance of Harrison Mevis has also contributed to the Rams’ positive outlook. Over the last three games, he has demonstrated his capability by connecting on 40- and 52-yard field goals in a decisive 34-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has also successfully converted all six of his extra-point attempts, helping to stabilize the Rams’ kicking game. The decision to rely on Mevis has shown promising results, reinforcing the team’s confidence in their current special teams setup.

Another factor that has added to the Rams’ success in special teams is the experienced snapper Jake McQuaide, who took over the role from Alex Ward. McQuaide’s expertise has brought a level of stability that is often understated but crucial in the context of kicking operations. Coach McVay expressed his satisfaction with the current arrangement, noting that he feels “a lot happier as head coach” when the team can focus on kicking extra points rather than field goals. The seamless collaboration among Mevis, holder Ethan Evans, and McQuaide has created a reliable kicking operation that the Rams hope to leverage as the season progresses.

As the Rams look ahead, the combination of roster adjustments and the emergence of solid specialists indicates a team striving for excellence. With their recent improvements in special teams and the potential return of key players from injury, the Rams are poised to make an impact in the coming weeks. Fans and analysts alike will be eager to see how these changes translate into on-field performance as the Rams continue their quest for success in the NFL.
