USC beat UCLA, but it is still losing the battle for relevance

UCLA Football: The Struggles of USC in a Fractured Sporting Landscape

The college football landscape in Los Angeles is currently dominated by the ongoing struggles of USC, overshadowed by a historically downtrodden UCLA football program. The spotlight often falls on UCLA’s dismal performance and the uncertainty surrounding its stadium situation in Pasadena. However, even amid UCLA’s challenges, USC finds itself grappling with its identity and relevance in the market. Once the undisputed king of Los Angeles football, USC now operates in the shadows, grappling with a lack of performance that has left its fanbase yearning for greatness.

USC’s Current State

After its recent 29-10 victory over UCLA, USC remains ranked 17th nationally but is far from the powerhouse status its supporters once expected. The Trojans’ journey under coach Lincoln Riley showcases a team that’s not completely incompetent but is stuck in a rut of mediocrity. The inability to buy out Riley’s contract signifies a team unwilling or unable to make the necessary bold moves to reclaim its former glory. Instead, they are relegated to being "good enough" to avoid embarrassment but not formidable enough to seriously compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff (CFP).

The Market Dynamics of Los Angeles

In a city where sports enthusiasm is contingent on winning, Riley himself recognizes the pressures that come with coaching at USC. He noted that a packed Coliseum, with nearly 70,000 tickets distributed for the game against UCLA, should not be confused with genuine fan excitement. While loyalty persists among the USC faithful, it is increasingly coupled with disappointment stemming from the team’s string of underwhelming performances. The losses to Illinois, Notre Dame, and Oregon have illustrated that the season may be remembered more for what was lost than what was achieved.

The Path Forward

Despite the disappointments, Riley maintains a forward-looking approach, claiming that this season sets a foundation for future growth. However, such statements have become routine, and the time for mere talk has passed. Fans are now demanding substantial results, urging the program to transition from its current state of stagnation to one of resurgence. As USC contemplates next season, they could largely mirror the current roster, albeit potentially losing key players to the NFL draft, further complicating their recovery efforts.

Defensive Woes Persist

A significant area of concern for the Trojans has been their inability to stop the run, a weakness that was glaringly evident during their three losses this season. Such deficiencies raise valid questions regarding Riley’s capacity to rectify systemic problems within the team. While incoming recruits may energize the program, the reality of relying heavily on freshmen to produce immediately casts a shadow over USC’s immediate prospects. The prospect of quarterback instability adds another layer of complexity to a team already struggling for identity.

The Future of USC Football

With five-star freshman quarterback prospect Husan Longstreet looming, the dynamics at the quarterback position may hold key implications for the Trojans’ future. Should starter Jayden Maiava return for his senior season, the possibility of Longstreet entering the transfer portal could arise—yet another story that feels eclipsed by the overall narrative of the program’s struggles. USC’s ability to remain relevant in the conversation surrounding college football hinges on resolving these pressing issues and recalibrating public perception.

Reclaiming Glory

Ultimately, USC’s road to redemption is fraught with challenges, but reclaiming its place in college football is achievable. Reestablishing a winning culture is essential, not only for fan engagement but for the legacy of the storied program. By fostering growth and accountability, and by addressing weaknesses, Riley has the opportunity to not just regain enthusiasm among fans, but to restore USC’s standing as a premier destination for elite football talent. The journey is long and arduous, yet with proactive steps, the Trojans might once again be a force to be reckoned with in the crowded Los Angeles sports scene.
