Discover the Future of Surfing: Vertigo Sports’ Innovative Wave Pools

Surf parks are rapidly emerging across the globe, enticing wave enthusiasts with the promise of perfect waves on demand. At the forefront of this movement in Russia is Vertigo Sports, a pioneering company introducing a state-of-the-art wave pool system that prioritizes energy efficiency and speed of installation. As surfers eagerly anticipate the opportunity to catch waves, many are left wondering how Vertigo Sports is revolutionizing the surfing experience. Learn more about surf parks here.

The Modular Wave Pool Design

At the heart of Vertigo’s technology lies a large artificial lagoon constructed from modular components. According to Alexander Ishchenko, the director of Vertigo Sports, the facility comprises four essential elements: a pool, a wave generator, a pumping station, and a filtration system. The pool itself is a robust frame structure made from rigid plastic panels supported by columns, designed to withstand the test of time and environmental factors. The integration of a waterproof geomembrane ensures water retention, while a soft interior lining promotes safety for surfers and their boards. The use of galvanized and plastic materials enhances the structure’s longevity, making it both durable and visually appealing.

Innovative Wave Generation Technology

The core of the surfing experience at Vertigo Sports is its patented wave generator, strategically positioned along the pool’s side. This groundbreaking machine utilizes 16 water chambers—known as caissons—that release water in a meticulously timed sequence to create surfable waves. Ishchenko notes that two sections generate the initial wave while 14 sections maintain its shape, allowing for unparalleled flexibility. With no moving mechanical parts underwater, the system’s precise timing enables operators to control various wave characteristics, such as height, shape, and direction. The result is a customizable experience catering to both beginners and seasoned surfers alike. Discover more about wave generation technology.

Optimal Surf Conditions Every Two Minutes

The standard Vertigo pool measures approximately 120 meters long and 60 meters wide, occupying around 0.7 hectares of land. This offers surfers the ability to catch waves that can reach heights of up to 1.7 meters. With a new wave created every two minutes, surfers experience about 30 rides per hour, offering ample opportunities for skill development in a controlled environment. This quick access to waves is particularly appealing to novice surfers, who benefit from the ability to practice repeatedly—something they might not achieve in natural surf conditions. Ishchenko emphasizes that the chief audience for this facility includes both seasoned surfers and those who have long dreamed of trying out surfing.

Advanced Infrastructure for Efficient Operations

Behind Vertigo’s wave pool lies a sophisticated technical foundation. The pumping station and filtration systems are pre-assembled within shipping containers, which can be quickly installed and connected on site. This plug-and-play infrastructure simplifies the installation process, allowing the entire system to become operational with minimal effort. The filtration system is designed to continually circulate and clean the water, ensuring consistent quality even with heavy daily use. A location with stable groundwater conditions and a reliable power supply is essential for the complete functionality of the surf park. Explore how filtration systems work in wave pools.

Overcoming Energy Challenges in Surf Parks

One of the significant challenges facing artificial surf parks is electricity consumption. Large wave systems can require substantial power, often making it costly to operate or difficult to establish in certain areas. Vertigo Sports co-founder Pavel Churin notes that energy efficiency is often a primary consideration when planning surf park projects. With their ocean-style wave systems typically consuming around 70 kilowatt-hours, and an entire installation requiring roughly 150 kilowatts of electrical capacity, Vertigo is in a prime position to simplify grid requirements. This efficiency can facilitate the development of surf parks in a broader range of locations. Churin highlights that energy considerations are crucial not only for operations but also for the viability of new projects.

Successful Launches and Future Innovations

As it stands, Vertigo Sports has successfully installed two operational surf parks in Russia. The first facility opened its doors in 2024 at the More Volnuetsa surf park in Rostov Oblast, featuring an 85-meter pool that produces waves reaching heights of 1.5 meters. The second facility debuted in August 2025 in Leningrad Oblast, showcasing a larger 120-meter pool generating waves of 1.6 to 1.7 meters. Together, these parks have trained thousands of surfers, with over 17,000 individuals riding the waves in 2025 alone. Moving forward, Vertigo is committed to advancing its technology, with engineers currently exploring a system capable of producing waves up to three meters high—potentially solidifying their place among the largest artificial surf waves worldwide. Find out more about the evolution of surf parks.

As surfing continues to evolve, innovations like those from Vertigo Sports demonstrate the exciting possibilities for both seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers to the sport. The intersection of technology and passion is transforming how we think about surfing, creating lasting memories and experiences for all.
